The AVMC is actively involved in research (clinical research and trial work,
NOT laboratory animal experimentation), teaching, education in general, authorship and in animal welfare projects.
Origins of the AVMC
Christopher Day, homeopathic vet & holistic vet, founded the AVMC
in 1987, and it was possibly the first dedicated alternative medicine veterinary practice (holistic) in the UK. However,
he had been using homeopathy in practice, since 1972 and on himself for many years before that.
Chinham House was
his family home, a country veterinary practice run by his parents, both of whom were vets. However, as contemporary veterinary
medicine developed along less traditional lines, with differing values, Mr Day found that he was unable to continue running
the business, which had meanwhile grown to a thriving five-man practice with four centres. He therefore set out on the specialist
alternative / holistic route, with a more traditional view of veterinary service, which was the nature of his own work in
the practice.
The premises is a tradtional farm house and smallholding, on which no pesticides, agro-chemicals
etc. are used. It has kept its old-style character and is run on organic management principles and accommodates 2 acres of
wildlife reserve.
